Greatest Horse Racing Trainers

Celebrating the master trainers whose judgement, innovation and horsemanship helped shape racing history

Martin Pipe

The greatest National Hunt trainer of all time

If one trainer deserves to stand proudly at the top of this page, it is Martin Pipe.

His achievements alone would put him among racing’s immortals. A 15 time champion jumps trainer, Martin Pipe trained more than 4,000 winners, sent out 34 Cheltenham Festival winners, a Grand National winner, and set a British jumps season record of 243 winners in 1999/2000. The fact that Cheltenham now stages the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle in his honour tells you everything about the scale of his legacy.

But Martin Pipe was never just about numbers. He changed National Hunt racing. His methods, fitness standards, professionalism and relentless attention to detail helped redefine what top level jumps training looked like in Britain. Long before marginal gains became fashionable, Martin Pipe was already moving the game on.

For Turf Talk, his place at the top of this page is also deeply personal. Martin Pipe trained our horses, including Sweet Glow, Ambassador, Parlezvousfrancais, Rastannorra, Sea Island and Always Special to name just a few. Those memories include runners at the Cheltenham Festival and, of course, Sweet Glow winning at Royal Ascot.

That is what makes this section feel so special. This is not simply a tribute to a legendary trainer from afar. It is a reflection on a trainer whose brilliance, standards and success we were fortunate enough to experience first hand.

There have been many exceptional jumps trainers, but for us there is no doubt. Martin Pipe remains the benchmark and the greatest National Hunt trainer the sport has ever seen.

Why Martin Pipe Still Sets The Standard

Many trainers have been brilliant. Very few have changed the sport itself.

Martin Pipe did both. His record was extraordinary, but it was the combination of innovation, consistency and major race success that made him different. His methods influenced a generation of trainers and helped modernise jumps racing in a way that still shapes the sport today.

Why Great Trainers Matter

The greatest horses often take the headlines, but behind almost every champion stands an exceptional trainer.

The greatest trainers know when to be patient, when to be bold and how to get the finest performances from elite talent. Their judgement can shape careers, define seasons and create moments that stay in the memory for decades.

That is why the greatest trainers deserve their place among racing’s true legends. And for Turf Talk, no name captures that better than Martin Pipe.
