Each Way Extra Explained

What extra place betting means, how it works and when it can offer genuine value

What Extra Place Betting Means

An extra place offer means a bookmaker is paying out on more finishing positions than the standard each way terms for that race.

For example, a handicap with 16 or more runners would normally pay 4 places. If a bookmaker advertises 5 places or 6 places, that is an extra place concession.

These offers are especially common at big meetings such as Cheltenham, Aintree and Royal Ascot, where bookmakers compete aggressively for punters.

Extra places can be useful, but they are not always as generous as they first appear. Sometimes the bookmaker offering the extra place will also be offering a slightly shorter win price.

Standard Terms

  • 5 to 7 runners: 2 places
  • 8 or more runners: 3 places
  • 16+ handicaps: 4 places
  • Place part paid at stated fraction
  • Bookmaker terms always matter

Extra Place Offers

  • 4 places becomes 5
  • 5 places becomes 6
  • Can reduce risk on each way bets
  • Very popular in big-field races
  • Most useful when the place angle is strong

  • Price may be shorter
  • Win value may be reduced
  • Not all extra place offers are equal
  • You still need a value bet
  • Always compare firms carefully

When Extra Places Are Worth Considering

Extra places are most useful when:

  • you fancy a horse to run well without necessarily winning
  • the horse is a solid each way type in a big-field handicap
  • the extra place increases your edge more than the reduced price hurts it
  • you are backing bigger-priced runners likely to be ridden for a place as well as the win

They are less useful when the bookmaker cuts the price too aggressively. If one firm offers 6 places at 10/1 but another offers 4 places at 14/1, the bigger win price may still be the better bet depending on the horse and race shape.

That is why extra place betting should be treated as a value calculation, not an automatic decision.
