County Hurdle Preview
The County Hurdle is one of the most competitive handicaps of the Cheltenham Festival and typically rewards well-handicapped runners aged between five and seven with strong recent form. Unlike some of the Grade 1 races, this is often a race where value can be found away from the very front of the market.
Recent winners have generally carried 11st 3lbs or less and arrived here having finished in the top three on their previous start. Experience over hurdles and proven ability at this distance are essential, while ratings between 134 and 144 have historically been a strong guide.
With big-field handicaps often producing surprise results, this looks another renewal where a well-treated and progressive runner could come out on top.
TURF TALK RATINGS - LEADING CONTENDERS
| Horse | Rating |
|---|---|
| Wilful | 225 |
| Hello Neighbour | 222 |
| Bowensonfire | 220 |
| Joyeuse | 214 |
| Sticktotheplan | 210 |
| Sinnatra | 206 |
The ratings highlight a tightly matched field, with several runners fitting the key handicap trends — particularly those in the ideal rating bracket and carrying a manageable weight.
MAIN SELECTION
Wilful (20/1 available)
He looks a very solid fit on the County Hurdle trends, sitting right in the ideal age bracket and rating range while also carrying a competitive weight. His recent form suggests he is arriving here in good condition, which is often key in this type of race.
He has the profile of a horse who can travel well in a strongly run handicap and looks capable of finding more off this mark if everything falls into place.
SECOND SELECTION
Hello Neighbour (18/1 available)
A very interesting runner based on the trends, particularly with his rating and overall hurdle profile. He has shown enough ability over this trip and looks the type who could be well treated in a race of this nature.
In a race where value often lies outside the favourites, he looks a strong contender to run well at a decent price.
THIRD SELECTION
Joyeuse (12/1 available)
Another runner who fits the key trends well and arrives here with a profile that suggests there could still be improvement to come. His rating puts him right in the sweet spot for recent winners, and he looks capable of getting involved if progressing again.
He may not be the most obvious selection in the field, but he has enough in his favour to be considered a serious contender.
SUMMARY
Wilful looks the strongest overall fit on the trends and ratings and appeals as the most likely winner in a typically competitive County Hurdle. Hello Neighbour rates a very solid value alternative with the right profile for a big-field handicap, while Joyeuse looks another who could outrun his odds in a race where bigger-priced runners often come to the fore.
