The Albert Bartlett is rarely a race for the obvious one at the top of the market and it has long had a reputation for throwing up tougher, battle-hardened stayers at rewarding prices.

The key trends pointed strongly towards six and seven-year-olds with proper staying form over three miles, a recent run within the last two months and enough hurdling experience to cope with the demands of a brutal Festival test. Favourites have a poor record in this race, so there was every reason to look a little deeper than the head of the betting.

These were the three that came out strongest on the Turf Talk figures.

TURF TALK RATINGS - LEADING CONTENDERS
Horse Turf Talk Rating
The Passing Wife 218
Doctor Steinberg 214
Spinningayarn 208
Mondoui’boy 203
Johnny’s Jury 197
Fruit De Mer 193

The ratings leaned towards the stronger Irish staying profiles, but this was again the type of Albert Bartlett where depth mattered. Proven stamina, a recent run and enough hurdling experience counted for plenty more than pure reputation.

MAIN SELECTION

The Passing Wife (12/1 available)

She looked the most complete fit on the key Albert Bartlett trends. She was the right age, had the right rating, had already shown she stayed this sort of trip and came here with enough hurdling experience to cope with a proper Festival war of attrition.

She also appealed as exactly the type this race often rewards: not a short-priced talking horse, but a solid staying novice with the right profile and a yard that knows how to place one for a test like this.

BACKUP SELECTION 1

Doctor Steinberg (7/2 available)

The obvious class angle in the race and one who came out very strongly on raw ability, but the Albert Bartlett is not always kind to the most obvious horse in the field. He had the rating and the talent, but there was just a slight concern that he might do too much too soon in a race where settling and conserving energy are often crucial.

Even so, on form he was impossible to leave out of the shortlist and if seeing the trip out strongly he looked the most likely danger to the selection.

BACKUP SELECTION 2

Spinningayarn (14/1 available)

A proper Albert Bartlett type at a fair each-way sort of price. He had the right age profile, the right sort of staying form and enough experience over hurdles to suggest he would not be found wanting for toughness when the race started to get serious from the top of the hill.

He was not the flashiest horse in the field, but that is often no bad thing in this race. On the Turf Talk figures he looked overpriced compared with some of the shorter runners.

SUMMARY

The Passing Wife came out top on the Turf Talk ratings as the strongest all-round staying profile in the race, with Doctor Steinberg bringing the class angle and Spinningayarn appealing as a solid value alternative in a contest that rarely goes to the obvious one.
