The Triumph Hurdle has become increasingly dangerous for anyone relying too heavily on the market. The broad trends still matter, but the juvenile division can move quickly and one powerful yard can completely reshape the race.

Willie Mullins continues to dominate this contest and his depth is once again a major factor. Leopardstown form, French-bred juveniles and lightly-raced runners remain the obvious angles, but this is a race where hidden improvement can count for just as much as visible form.

Using the Turf Talk approach, these are the three that come out best on the ratings.

TURF TALK RATINGS - LEADING CONTENDERS
Horse Turf Talk Rating
Lady Vega Allen 220
Lumiere du Large 214
Apolon De Charnie 203
Charlus 196
Mondo Man 184
Blue Lemons 176
Too Bossy For Us 169

The ratings still favour the obvious Mullins juveniles from the stronger Irish form lines, but this remains a race where a lightly-raced stablemate can take a sizeable step forward and upset the expected order.

MAIN SELECTION

Lady Vega Allen (3/1 available)

She heads the ratings and makes the strongest appeal on the obvious form lines.

She has the stable, the profile and the class to be a major player in this race. In a Triumph where there are always a few unknowns, she still looks the most solid option on what has been shown so far.

BACKUP SELECTION 1

Lumiere du Large (4/1 available)

The obvious danger and another juvenile with a smart profile.

She has enough ability and the right stable support to be taken very seriously. If the main selection does not quite deliver on the day, she looks one of the most likely to step into the gap.

BACKUP SELECTION 2

Apolon De Charnie (50/1 available)

A huge outsider in the market, but another one from the stable that keeps tightening its grip on this race.

On public form he is not an obvious pick, but this is the sort of contest where a less exposed juvenile from a powerhouse yard can improve rapidly. He is not easy to make a strong case for, but completely dismissing him at a big price may be dangerous. We gave Poniros as a backup selection last year so won’t be scared to give this one a mention. The trends are strong in this race.

SUMMARY

Lady Vega Allen heads the ratings and gets the vote, with Lumiere du Large the obvious danger, while Apolon De Charnie is the sort of huge-priced Mullins outsider who could be much more dangerous than the market suggests.
