About Turf Talk

A long-standing racing name built on ratings, big-race insight and a genuine lifetime connection with the sport.

The Story Of Turf Talk

Turf Talk originally launched in the UK in 1994 as a ratings programme company. The algorithm had first been developed for the Australian market, but after producing such encouraging results it was adapted for use in the UK and quickly gained a strong reputation.

Its real strength was always in the major meetings and in handicaps in particular. The ratings were so well regarded at the time that the system received endorsement from respected racing figures including Martin Pipe and Peter Scudamore.

Back then the product was known as Computerace and was sold as a handheld device. It has not been commercially available for many years, but the core principles behind it have never disappeared. They have simply continued in a more private form, shaping the way Turf Talk analyses races to this day.

From Ratings To Online Tipping

In 2007 Turf Talk evolved into an online horse racing tips service. By combining the ratings system with experience, race reading and strong information, the site quickly built a reputation for finding major winners and performing strongly in the biggest races.

For a period of around three years Turf Talk was operating at full throttle and was right at the top of its game. One of the standout days came in the 2010 Scottish Grand National when Merigo and Gone To Lunch were tipped to finish first and second.

Over time, with other business interests running alongside it, the site naturally changed direction. Rather than trying to maintain a full-time tipping operation, Turf Talk became more selective and more personal. That meant fewer all-action service periods, but it also meant the site remained alive as a place for opinions, trends, racing thoughts and free tips.

That is still very much the spirit of Turf Talk today. It is rooted in serious racing knowledge, but now carries a blog-style feel with freedom to focus on the races that matter most. And as for the future, never say never.

A Lifetime In Racing

Turf Talk is not just built on numbers. It is built on a genuine lifetime connection with horse racing.

Our first winner as owners came with Ambassador at Nottingham in 1988 and that only deepened a passion for the sport that was already there. Over the years we have owned a number of horses, including a runner in the Champion Hurdle, and enjoyed one of the great days any owner could wish for when Sweet Glow won the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1994.

Although it has been a while since we last owned a horse outright, the involvement has never really stopped. Through partnerships and syndicates there has always been that ongoing connection to the sport, the people and the unique thrill that only racing can bring.

That background matters because Turf Talk has never been about pretending to know racing from a distance. It comes from living it, following it closely, and understanding both the numbers and the emotions that make this sport so addictive.
